Nationwide House Clearance were contacted by a concerned friend of a gentleman who was known to live in squalor, but nobody knew to what extent.

The person in question, Paul, had been admitted to hospital for a week which gave his friend, Sarah, an opportunity to find out just how bad his property was – a 3 bedroom semi-detached house in Huyton, Merseyside.

When Sarah opened the front door which took some doing as the passage way was cluttered, she was both shocked and upset. The property was not only badly cluttered, but it was also extremely verminous.

Sarah searched online for a specialist house clearance company and found us. She called at first and explained the situation. We asked a few questions and knew immediately based on the information given to us by Sarah that we would have to visit this particular property in order to provide an accurate quote to clear it.

So we went to visit the property, a service we provide free of charge for most extreme house clearances.

We have strong stomachs and clear cluttered and verminous properties every week, but this property was absolutely horrendous and all the more tragic knowing someone was actually living in the property up until he was hospitalised for a stomach infection which he had actually picked up from all of the bacteria in the property.

In the living room there were bottles of urine all over, empty dog food cartons, decaying food waste, human feces and dog feces and these was repeated throughout all of the rooms. The gentleman was sleeping on a sofa in the living room, him and his pet dog, in and among all of the clutter and verminous waste.

If he had continued to live in that kind of squalor, his health would have been seriously affected. People have been known to die in their homes when they are as cluttered and as verminous as this property.

Going from room to room, it was clear that this property didn’t just need totally cleared, but totally gutted as well. The kitchen, the bathroom, doors, flooring and even windows would need replaced.

We submitted our quote and were given the go-ahead to clear the property in full following a chat with Sarah and Paul, who accepted our offer of help and our recommendation to gut the property so that he could one day return in order to live in a clean and sustainable home.

We sent one of our large vans and one of our works vehicles along with 6 of our highly trained, experienced and fully equipped men to carry out the clearance. It took two full days and 8 full van loads to clear the 3 bedroom house. Because the vast majority of the contents were contaminated with bacteria we could only really salvage 5% of the contents which were some of Paul’s clothing, photos, his TV, some DVDs and CDs and personal paperwork.

When we managed to clear the living room and kitchen the floors had several large holes in them from the weight of the clutter, due to the urine seeping into the wood and because of mice chewing through the wood. Underneath the double bed in the main bedroom there was over 5 bin bags of dog feces that had to be removed. In total we also removed over 300 dog tins, 300 bottles of urine and about a further 50 bin bags of human, animal and decaying food waste.

This is one of the worst properties we have cleared in terms of smell and verminous waste.

*We are delighted to learn, several months on from clearing this property, that building work is underway, that Paul’s health has improved and that he is looking forward to returning home.
