Gateshead property clearance case study, Tyneside

Job description: Unattended death in the house clearance, one-off property clean
Area: Tyneside
Property type: 2 bedroom second floor flat
How long the body lay in the property for: 6 days
Van loads to clear: Half a van load
Number of staff: 4
Time taken: 4 hours
How much was recycled: 70%

Nationwide were appointed to carry out declutter and clean up of 2 bedroom second floor flat in Gateshead, Tyneside. There had been an unattended death in the property sadly, with the body having lay there for 6 days.

The property was a private owned and rented flat that was fully furnished and the relatives of the deceased instructed us to remove only the deceased’s personal belongings such as clothes, any items that were contaminated or soiled and all junk and rubbish. They also instructed us to carry out a one-off deep clean after the clearance.

We sent 4 of our fully insured and licenced men who arrived at 9.30am in their large blue custom-built crew cab luton box van and it took almost 4 hours to clear and clean it in total.

Being fully furnished with many items in very good condition and belonging to the owner of the property, this was more of a declutter or partial clearance than a full one.

The men removed over 150 empty bottles of whiskey and vodka, empty food cartons, some decaying food waste, a large leather sofa and 4 damaged table chairs from the living room along with other misc junk such as hundreds of cigarette ends.

In the kitchen the men removed a bin full of rotten decaying food waste and other rubbish, some pots and pans that were too far gone to clean and various other misc items.

In the bathroom the men removed some clothing, bric-a-brac and old toiletries. In the back bedroom which was the cleanest part of the property the men removed all clothing from the wardrobe, the bed and in the corner of the room.

The main bedroom – where the tenant of the property had sadly died (due to a long battle with alcoholism) – the men removed some clothing, some bedding and the soiled mattress where the body had lay unattended for 6 days. It took the men less than an hour to remove all of the junk, clutter and soiled items.

After the clearance the men set about carrying out a one-off deep clean of the flat which was a very thorough clean that took 3 hours to carry out.

The junk removed from the property was less than a van full and 70% was recycled namely clothing textiles, pots and pans, the metal and textiles from the soiled table chairs and other misc items.

Although most house clearances are all different, unattended death in the property house clearances where the person has died through the disease that is alcoholism (which is massively common in the UK) all have a familiar look and feel to them. Empty bottles of alcohol, food cartons from takeaways, clothing strewn all over the property and a general unkempt look.

Whenever we carry out such clearances we always treat each individual property with the utmost respect fully aware that someone has passed away inside the property and were left unattended for a period of time. We are also always respectful and mindful that for relatives this kind of clearance is the very worst to have to deal with because of the ‘horrors’ that are often present in these kind of clearances.

Its not nice for anyone, but our staff are very experienced and can deal with the very worst of such clearances. This particular clearance was by no means the worst we have encountered and we emphasised that to the poor customer who was embarrassed and saddened when they needn’t have been.

We don’t judge here at Nationwide, we just do what is needed and that is helping the relatives of someone left dead unattended in their home.

This is what the customer had to say about our service:

“I thought the men from Nationwide were brilliant today helping me clear and clean my late father’s flat which was quite messy. The men put me at ease and made me feel reassured that come lunch-time which was their estimated finish time, that the flat would be just like I hoped, all nice and clean. And it was. As soon as I walked in the smell was so much better and it looked really clean and tidy. They obviously worked very hard and did a great job. As a customer I was very pleased and would recommend them 100% as they clearly know what they are doing.” Stacey Johnson – Tyneside
