Nationwide were appointed to carry out the total clearance of a 1 bedroom ground floor bedsit in Crewe, Cheshire. The property was not only very cluttered and verminous, but there had also been an unattended death in the property unfortunately, with the body having lay there for an estimated 2 weeks.

We were contacted by Environmental Health via e-mail about this property and after sending us some photos and an analysis of what there was in the property, we sent 4 of our highly trained, experienced and fully licenced extreme house clearance staff to the scene.

Arriving at 9.30am in our specialist custom built crew cab luton van, the men were greeted by someone from Environmental Health and were then given access to the property.

Immediately we knew this was one of the worst clearances we have undertaken in terms of the filth and grime and bad smell. It being a warm and sunny day confounded this even further.

The property contained decaying food waste, human feces, animal feces, blood, urine and other bodily fluids and also a decomposing cat that was found inside a cat litter tray that was full of human feces and urine. This was a property of extreme squalor and again, one of the worst we have encountered.

Before we undertake such clearances we photograph and video document the clearance and then we ‘suit and boot up’ with our PPE, the health and safety of our staff is paramount for us.

Once we are fully protected we go into the property and then spray specialist non harmful chemicals developed by us here at Nationwide to try and eliminate some of the odours or to at least make the smell a little more easier to deal with. Despite our mask the smell on these extreme clearances can be pretty much unbearable, especially once the clutter and junk is being removed as it disturbs things.

Inside the small one bedroom bedsit we tackled the living room area first which also contained an open plan type kitchen. The men removed two large sofas, one of which had to be broken up, and other items of furniture before tackling the clutter which consisted of clothes, decaying food waste cartons, cans, bottles, newspapers and other junk.

From the living room area we removed over 30 open tins of urine and several tubs of human excrement. The property was also full of flies which were alive and lots of maggots and other critters such as fleas which are very harmful to human beings. Every single member of our staff have all been inoculated and get regular health check-ups.

After we cleared the living room we moved onto the bedroom, removing a large double bed and again other junk and clutter. This room was worse than the living room as almost all of the clutter and junk had been soiled with human urine and was covered in feces, both human and from cats.

The bathroom was the worst area of the property, however. This is where the body had lay unattended for 2 weeks and where the worst of the squalor had taken place. The person had been using the bath as a toilet. Once the men removed the clutter and soiled items one brave member of staff tackled he bath.

Plunging his hands into a bathtub full of human feces, urine and other junk he managed to unblock it before using a hand held shovel and a container to scoop out the feces.

It took the men in total just under 5 hours to clear the bedsit using 2 van loads. Very little was actually recycled due to the condition of the items and junk.
