Nationwide were appointed by an insurance company and Environmental Health to carry out a cluttered house clearance of a 3 bedroom semi-detached house in Dronfield, Derbyshire. This – as events unfolded – was no ordinary house clearance, however.

The property in question was subsiding and structurally it wasn’t safe to live in. The insurance company therefore requested that the property be fully empty before the builders would commence work to repair the property. The contents were not to be disposed of, however, but placed into storage until the work was completed.

And that is where we came into the picture. We were first contacted by Environmental Health who informed us that they had a dirty and cluttered property that was in such a bad state of disrepair, no builder would go in until the property was fully cleared.

We were told it would be two or three van loads and that we would have the property cleared in one day and could we submit a quote to the insurance company – which we dully did. We were given the go-ahead to carry out the clearance mid January 2015.

We sent three of our fully uniformed and experienced men to carry out the clearance. When the men arrived at the house, however, they were confronted not only with one of the most cluttered and dirtiest of homes they had ever encountered, but there was no direct access to the property so they had to park their van a few hundred feet away.

The lead member, Kevin, using all of his experience, requested a chat with one of the Environmental Health guys who were there to supervise and told him that it would take more than a few van loads and one day to clear the property. Eventually between Nationwide House Clearance, Environmental Health and the insurance company, it was agreed that several days were needed to clear the property.

Nationwide could have easily walked away from a job that was described to us in a totally different way to the reality of the situation, but that isn’t how we work. We work around things and find solutions to problems. We have never walked away from a job yet!

We were told every single item in the property that wasn’t decaying food waste or obvious rubbish, had to be boxed and bagged up and loaded into the van and taken to a storage container a few miles away. The insurance company had initially hired a 10-yard storage container which wasn’t going to suffice so we suggested they needed at least an extra two 20-yard storage containers, to which they agreed.

The property itself was badly subsiding, there were cracks in the walls and the whole building looked like it was leaning to one side a few feet. The 3 bedroom house was also extremely cluttered with most rooms full from floor to ceiling with books, clothing, magazines and general clutter. You couldn’t see the furniture for all of the clutter.

It was also very grimy and dirty, although not verminous. Surprisingly there was no mice or rat droppings or any critters. Instead there was dust, cobwebs and a build up of grime and dirt on almost all surfaces, carpets, appliances and the kitchen and bathroom especially.

The men estimated a total of three days to clear the property using perhaps upto 10 vans loads. As a result we sent another van and a further 3 men to the clearance to help facilitate this. That would have been achievable had it not snowed heavily on day two, however, which followed into the following day with upto 2 feet of snow landing. An already arduous task of carrying boxes and bags to a vehicle parked several hundred feet away on dry land was impossible in thick snow.

Rather than down tools, however, our men decided to spend the two snowed in days boxing up and bagging everything inside the property ready for loading the vans once the snow had gone, which by day four it had started to disappear.

By day five the whole property was eventually cleared, the men packed all of the storage containers with over 2,000 boxes and 500 black bags. The men also removed 2 van loads of rubbish from the property that had to be disposed of. In total over 15 tonnes were removed from the house, with over 3,000 books and magazines and over 100 bags of clothing and bedding.

The neigbours were so happy, they gave the men a thankyou card and a box of chocolates. This was one of the most challenging of clearances we have undertaken, but as ever, we always get the job done.
